Gloria Jean's: Making Drive-Thru Convenience and Patio Comfort Feel Like One Cafe

An Australian Coffee Staple Designed for Cars, Pavement and Patio

Gloria Jean's has been part of Australian coffee culture since the mid-1990s, and this modern store brings that heritage to a drive-thru format with a bright outdoor patio out front. The brief was to make the store feel like one welcoming place whether customers pull up for a takeaway cup or settle in for a slow coffee under the awning. RON GROUP supplied the furniture and greenery package that ties the street-side terrace to the indoor lounge in a single look.

"The furniture lets the drive-thru lane and the patio seating work together, so customers get the same warm coffee-house feeling whether they stay for five minutes or fifty." — Gloria Jean's Store Team

Black mesh outdoor chairs, weathered timber tables, an oversized coffee-cup sign and neon wall accents carry one brand language from the kerb to the counter.

The cafe was supplied as one coordinated package, so timber tables, outdoor seating, planters and hanging greenery read as a single brand story from the counter to the kerb. RON GROUP worked with the Gloria Jean's store team through the delivery, and together they finished with a store ready to be opened and repeated across the network.

A Coffee Chain Still Growing After Forty Years of Pouring

Gloria Jean's began pouring coffee in the United States in 1979 and was brought to Australia in the 1990s, where it grew into one of the country's most recognised coffee brands before joining the Retail Food Group. The brand now describes more than 600 stores across around 40 countries, and in Australia its network reaches high streets, shopping centres and drive-thru sites. A store like this one has to move a steady line of takeaway and drive-thru orders while still giving seated customers a calm place to spend time.

Inside and out, the layout splits into a fast service zone by the counter and a layered seating plan that flows from the awning-covered patio through to a greener indoor lounge. Because the patio faces the weather every day, the outdoor furniture had to be genuinely durable; inside, timber, patterned chairs and hanging plants create the warmth that keeps customers choosing Gloria Jean's as a place to stay, not just a place to collect from.

Client Needs

  • Outdoor seating that survives Australian sun and rain while matching a modern black facade.

  • Warm, greener indoor areas that encourage customers to stay beyond their first cup.

  • A coordinated look that unites drive-thru convenience, patio seating and the indoor lounge.

  • One repeatable furniture standard the franchise can use for future openings and refits.

How We Meet the Vision

Outdoor Zones Tuned for Sun, Rain and Quick Turnover

The patio needed furniture that stays presentable through full sun and sudden rain, so the store uses black mesh chairs and solid timber and stone-look table tops that resist moisture and wipe down fast. Square tops let single customers and pairs share the space comfortably, keeping the terrace easy to turn over on a busy morning. Planters and timber screens add softness without giving the furniture anything that would wear out outdoors.

Light tabletops with black mesh chairs break the patio into relaxed seating groups, separated by timber planters that keep the outdoor room feeling open and green.

Greenery That Softens the Coffee Bar Interior

Inside the store, hanging greenery does the work of dividing the space and adding warmth without heavy construction. Ferns suspended from the ceiling and planters placed between tables turn an otherwise functional coffee bar into a room people want to linger in. Timber tables and mesh and patterned chairs stay light in weight so the floor plan can be rearranged for different times of day.

Ferns suspended over timber tables and white seating bring a living layer of green into the main coffee lounge, keeping the space bright and inviting.

A Neon Wall Moment That Gives the Brand a Frame

A black brick wall with a glowing Gloria Jean's neon sign gives the indoor lounge a clear focal point for customers and a natural background for their photos. Around the sign, timber tables and patterned chairs create a small, comfortable zone that shows how a single accent element can anchor a whole seating area. The design keeps the brand mark visible without letting decor compete with the service counter.

Tables and Chairs That Move Between Coffee and Catch-Ups

Seating across the store mixes solid timber tops, white tables and patterned chairs so couples, remote workers and larger groups all have a place to sit. The furniture is intentionally uncomplicated to maintain, since a coffee chain needs pieces that handle spills and busy weekends without special care. This makes the same seating package easy to roll out again when the brand opens another store.
